What to Do in a Dental Emergency?

If you find yourself in a situation where you need immediate dental care, we encourage you to call us at 210-910-4999, and follow these steps to keep the situation under control until you can get to our office.

  • Cracked Tooth: Rinse the area with warm water and remove any food or bacteria that may be around it. If possible, apply a cold compress to the area to reduce swelling.
  • Knocked Out Tooth: Try to stay calm. If you can find the tooth, clean it first and keep it moist by putting it back in your mouth and if possible, back in the socket. Avoid touching the root of the knocked-out tooth. If you are unable to put it back in the socket, place the tooth in a glass of milk instead. These steps can help keep your tooth alive long enough for us to place it back in the socket, where it can heal.
  • Severe Tooth Pain: If you’re experiencing excruciating tooth pain, take some over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen and put an icepack on the outside of your cheek, closest to the inflamed area.
  • Serious Injury: If you have excessive bleeding, or another dental problem that warrants immediate medical attention, please call 911.
