The History of Dentistry

Modern dentistry is truly a marvel, especially in light of the advancements that have been made over the course of human history. Travel back in time with us as we explore a brief overview of the history of dental care.

Ancient Dentistry

Dentistry goes all the way back to ancient times, as early as 7,000 B.C. In 2,600 B.C., Hesy-Re’s death was recorded. He was an Egyptian scribe, and the first person ever identified as a dentist. About 1000 years later, the Egyptians produced the first text, the Ebers Papyrus, to ever discuss tooth ailments and remedies. The Greeks and Romans were concerned with the teeth as well. Aristotle and Hippocrates wrote about dentistry, and even thought about using wires to secure a loose tooth or a fractured jaw.

Middle Ages

It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that dentistry began to resemble a profession. Barbers actually emerged first; many barbers counted tooth extractions among their responsibilities. It wasn’t until the 1500s when people started to really write and publish on the subject of dentistry, with the very first book appearing in 1530.

The 18th & 19th Centuries

Over the course of two centuries, a number of figures appeared and made great strides in the developing field of dentistry. Pierre Fauchard became the first to publish a comprehensive guide to dentistry. Claude Mouton suggests the use of white enamel in crowns. James Snell invented the reclining dental chair. These moments and many, many more brought us ever closer to what we know as modern dentistry.
